Johannesburg to Crete

Flight Option 1 (Two Layovers):

Travel Notes: Consider spending a night or two in Athens to explore iconic landmarks such as the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Plaka District.Hotels near Athens International Airport (ATH) or in the city center are convenient for a short stopover.

 

For a scenic alternative, you can fly from Johannesburg to other Greek islands, such as Santorini, and then take a ferry to Crete. This option allows you to enjoy the charm of another Greek destination before arriving in Crete.

​Rethymno is approximately 80 km from Heraklion and 70 Km from Chania, with a driving time of about 1 hour. â€‹

  • Shuttle Services: Pre-booked shuttle services offer shared rides at a lower cost, typically ranging from €20 to €40 per person.

Public Transport

  • Bus: KTEL offers a direct bus from Chania Airport to Rethymno every 4 hours (1 hr 50 mins, €6–€9). The bus stop is across from Departures, and tickets can be bought from the driver.

Rental Car 

  • Renting a car is a flexible option and allows you to explore the island at your own pace. Car rentals are available directly at Heraklion Airport from major agencies such as Hertz, Avis, and Europcar. Prices typically start around €25–€50 depending on the season.
